When the French explorers and traders came to the area in the 17th century,
they saw an abundance of wild leeks growing in the forests and on the bank
of a small river. They translated the local Native American name of those
wild garlic as "chicagoua". The small river is now the Chicago River that
traverses the City of Chicago.
The City of Chicago and its suburbs now constitute the Chicagoland metropolitan area. Elected Officials | | |
