Biking along Lake Michigan
Let's go biking from the Rainbow Beach Park in Chicago along the shore of Lake Michigan, all the way to Illinois Beach State Park in Zion. The link above is the Google direction for the biking trip (yes, Google Maps has biking directions). Along the way, you'll see:
  1. Chicago Lake Front Trails - Almost 19 miles of bike paths, with the sound of lake waves on your right and the sight of beautiful Chicago everywhere
  2. North Shore Channel Trail - Almost 7 miles to Evanston, with the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park with its over 60 outdoor sculptures as the highlight of the ride
  3. Green Bay Trail - 9 miles through North Shore towns, with side trips for beachfront views of the lake, one stop at Ravinia and many for summer wildflowers.
  4. Robert McClory Bike Trail - About 8 miles on this 26-miles bike trail, through quaint downtowns, tree-sheltered neighborhoods and prairies to the Illinois Beach State Park.
  5. Zion Bike Trail - For 6 miles from the South end of Illinois Beach State Park to the North end, with unique shoreline views of natural dunes, wetlands, woodlands, prairies.and Lake Michigan.

There is no rain forest in Chicago metro, but there are plenty of forest preserves with friendly bike paths that beckon you to spend the summer days on two wheels.

Northeastern Illinois Bicycling
The State of Illinois labels the northeastern region as District 1. It covers the six-county greater Chicago metropolitan area (Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will). This district has the richest opportunities for off-road bicycling with over 750 miles of existing trails, and hundreds more under construction or in planning. You can get the biking trail maps online. Or call the Policy & Map Distribution Office to order free Illinois bike maps in all the districts in Illinois.
